DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE
Lorinda Schrammel, OSU Training Services
Elective for Leadership Development Program or
Elective for Ambassador Program

The easiest way to deal with difficult people is to stay as far away from them as you can, suggests Robert Bramson Ph.D., organizational psychologist, management consultant with Bramson Gill Associates, and author of Coping with Difficult People.  Great advice for those who work by themselves at home; it’s a doable option. But the vast majority of people can’t avoid interactions with a wide range of personality types, including some who are inconsiderate, stubborn, incorrigible, inappeasable, indecent, or downright sleazy. In fact, success sometimes depends on your ability to work well with all the above.  At the conclusion of this workshop, you will know how to:  recognize how your own attitudes and actions impact on others; find new and effective techniques for dealing with difficult people; develop coping strategies for dealing with difficult people and difficult situations; identify those times when you have the right to walk away from a difficult situation; and learn some techniques for managing and dealing with anger.

Marcy Luter, Meridian Technology Center
Professional Development for Advanced Leadership Program or
Elective for Leadership Development Program or
Elective for Ambassador Program

Elective for the Administrative Professionals Program
Research suggests that our decisions are disrupted by an array of irrationalities and biases: We are overconfident. We seek out information that supports us and downplay information that doesn’t. We get distracted by short-term emotions. Unfortunately, being aware of these shortcomings doesn’t fix the problem, so we have to learn how to do better. This session will offer you a better framework to use when making decisions. You’ll learn a step-by-step method to widen your options, reality test your assumptions, attain some distance and prepare to be wrong. You will also brainstorm and discuss practical solutions to common decisions we each have to make on a daily and weekly basis.

TITLE VII AND TITLE IX RESPONSIBILITIES OF FACULTY AND STAFF
Awareness and Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Sexual Misconduct
Dr. Rosalyn Green, Director of Equal Opportunity
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education programs and activities that receive federal funds. Sex discrimination includes sexual violence and gender-based harassment.Title VII prohibits an employer from discriminating against an employee not only on the basis of sex, but also race, color, national origin, and religion. Like Title IX, this includes prohibition of same-sex harassment. Recently, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) conducted extensive reviews of Title IX compliance that resulted in settlements in several campus sexual-harassment cases. In the wake of those settlements, OCR issued a "Dear Colleague" letter to remind schools of their responsibilities in handling sexual-harassment claims — and particularly allegations of sexual violence — under Title IX. Those responsibilities include adopting and publishing Title IX sexual-harassment grievance procedures, designating Title IX coordinators to investigate complaints, and training staff, faculty, coaches, security and resident advisors on Title IX, among others. This course discusses sexual harassment obligations under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (as amended) and Title IX of the Education Act of 1972.   The material is designed to reinforce the responsibilities of supervisors to identify and help to prevent discriminatory harassment in the University community.
